
Collaborative and distributed systems are characteristic of the next generation of computer applications. They will operate in a complex and knowledge-intensive, albeit artificial world, and therefore must be intelligent and adept at assisting humans in navigating and exploiting that environment. With the advent of multimedia software, virtual reality, the world wide web and ever faster communication networks, collaborative and distributed systems are finding more and more pertinence in both academia and industry.
